Food Systems Animation Transcript

Video transcript:

Animation shows a wide blue arrow moving horizontally on a white background. This arrow represents our current wasteful linear food system. As the system arrow moves, a white icon of leaves and text that says ‘Farming’ appears, and a small piece of the arrow, representing waste, splits and points downward with the text ‘Food Waste.’ The system arrow continues, with a white icon showing a factory and text that says ‘Production,’ a white icon showing a truck and text that says ‘Distribution,’ and another waste arrow splitting and moving downward to represent more food waste. A white icon showing a spoon, fork, and knife and text that says ‘Consumption’ appears at the end of the system arrow, with one last waste arrow that is larger than the rest, which represents the food wasted at the consumption stage. The final arrow is much thinner than it originated, showing how much food was lost throughout the system.

The animation pauses, and then shows the system arrow curving downwards and back on itself and beginning to create a circle. The linear system and waste arrows fade to white. As the system arrow begins to curve into a circle, a white icon of leaves and text of ‘Farming’ appears, showing that the system is restarting, but now as a circle instead of a line. The waste arrow that originally represented waste at the consumption curves back to create a circle that reenters the system where it left and text saying ‘Prevention’ appears inside. The system arrow continues to curve into a circle, and a white icon showing a factory and text that says ‘Production,’ and a white icon showing a truck and text that says ‘Distribution,’ appear along the system. Two more waste arrows split off of the system, but they are inside the circle and curve back on themselves with the text ‘Rescue’ and ‘Valorization’ appearing in their centers. As the system arrow returns to where it began, closing the circle, a white icon of a spoon, fork, and knife with the text ‘Consumption’ appears. The three interior arrows close their circles, creating a venn diagram of ‘Prevention,’ ‘Rescue,’ and ‘Valorization’ within the larger circle. In the center of where these three circles overlap, text appears that says ‘Co-Benefits.’

The animation now shows the complete circular food system moving through the four stages of Farming, Production, Distribution, and Consumption. The arrowheads representing Prevention, Rescue, and Valorization continuously move around the inner circles, symbolizing the sustainable nature of this new system.
